Why separation exists
Setbacks reduce the risk that wastewater contaminants reach drinking-water sources. The tank, drainfield, replacement area, property line, building, surface water, and well can each have different minimum distances.
Use the local plan
The approved site/plot plan should show the regulated separation distances. Do not relocate a well or septic component based on a general web answer.
What to verify locally
Permitting, inspection, setbacks, acceptable system types, professional licensing, and design requirements are controlled by state and local authorities. If your question affects construction, a property purchase, a repair, or drinking-water safety, confirm the answer with the local health/environmental department.
