What a septic system does

A septic system treats household wastewater on the property rather than sending it to a municipal sewer. A conventional system typically uses a buried tank for settling and digestion followed by a soil absorption area where effluent receives additional treatment.

Main components

Most conventional systems include the building sewer, septic tank, outlet/baffle or filter, distribution components, and drainfield. Alternative systems can add pumps, dosing tanks, treatment units, sand filters, mounds, drip dispersal, or other technologies.

Site suitability

System type and size can depend on household design flow, soil characteristics, slope, lot configuration, groundwater, water bodies, wells, setbacks, and local regulations. EPA emphasizes that designs vary widely even within a neighborhood.

Permits and local authority

EPA does not issue ordinary single-family septic permits. State law typically sets the framework and local health/environmental departments administer permits and inspections.

Maintenance

EPA recommends regular inspections—generally every 1 to 3 years—and typical household tank pumping every 3 to 5 years, adjusted to the actual system and solids accumulation.

Failure signs

Backups, slow drains, gurgling, odors, standing water, soggy soil, or unusually lush growth over the drainfield can indicate a problem. Reduce wastewater loading and arrange professional evaluation.
